Arlington has a long and colorful history, as one of the first areas in the United States to be visited by the Europeans, and the site of the French Fort Caroline in 1564-1565, which is now the Fort Caroline National Memorial Park. In more recent times, the Matthews Bridge opening in 1953 made Arlington a favorite bedroom community for downtown business people. Just over the bridge, no more than a 15 minute drive from Arlington is the Jacksonville Sports Complex with the Jaguars’ Everbank Stadium, Jacksonville Baseball Grounds, Metropolitan Park and the Jacksonville Arena. Arlington is also home to Jacksonville University, one of the state’s most well-known private four year institutions.
